Garrison Farm

New Calf & Maternity Facility Project

On Garrison Farm, the Delaware County Farm Enhancement grant made a huge impact for farmers and animals alike. Using the award to assist in the construction of a new calf and maternity facility, the new barn will improve herd health and decrease labor needed to care for animals. The 40-cow dairy is pasture based and milked in a conventional 3 row barn and has been a labor of love for generations in the Garrison family. With the new facility, the family is excited about future for their most vulnerable population-young stock.

Farm Enhancement grant funds enabled to build a barn that will have a spacious calving area for calves to be born in a clean, safe, comfortable environment and moms to have individualized care. Baby calves will then move to individual housing through weaning and then move on to group housing, saving time and labor in calf care, while also improving their health and management. The farm is hopeful that this will allow them to move their age at first calving up, allowing the herd to be more productive.
