Machinery Shop Construction Project

The Delaware County Farm Enhancement grant project implemented at Creek-Crest Holsteins has created money & time savings and positioned the farm to work the fields as soon as weather conditions permit. The Hymer family utilized a grant to assist them in constructing a machinery shop for preventative maintenance and repairs to their farm equipment. This 60 cow dairy crops 350 acres to support the herd, harvest market hay and vegetable crop production.

The new, single-bay machinery shop has been a positive investment, allowing larger repairs to be completed on-site. These types of jobs previously required machinery and equipment to be sent out for repair work, adding expense and extending time to completion. Prior to construction, service work was completed outdoors; now farm equipment can be serviced all winter long, and in the evenings, capitalizing on times when there are less fieldwork demands. This creates a fleet readiness for opportune planting and harvesting times, reduced outside labor cost, increased planting and harvesting efficiencies, and will extend the life of equipment.

Tyler Hymer expressed his appreciation of the Enhancement Grant program for providing opportunity to farms to complete projects they would not otherwise have been able to accomplish. In discussing his project, the recognition of investment in farming as a solid investment in the local economy was clearly demonstrated in the implementation of this grant.
