On the Liddle Farm in Andes, NY the Delaware County Farm Enhancement grant enabled the completion of a project to save labor, eliminate feed waste and provided for more targeted feeding management of the dairy herd. Installing a roofed barn yard enabled the farm to feed their animals in a much more efficient manner, replacing hand labor and multiple handlings of hay with tractor labor.
The savings in time and effort alone are a significant benefit to the farm, but this project yields greater returns. Foremost the farm has been able to reduce hay waste, which translates into reduced feed costs. This management change has also allowed the farm to provided more targeted feeding of cattle to precisely meet nutritional needs. This is accomplished by feeding the animals in groups according to their needs.
Ultimately this minimizes the environmental impact of the farm, reducing feed waste that needs to be disposed of. Precision feeding is of benefit as well, providing animals with correct amount of nutrients their bodies will utilize rather than excess nutrients bypassing their digestive system and being discharged in waste that needs to be handled.
