All Delaware County 4-H Members who intend to participate in any 4-H animal show at the Delaware County Fair must participate in the animal handling program to be eligible to show. This requirement will be offered by 4-H age categories as outlined: • Cloverbud (5-7 y\o) • Junior (8-13 y\o) • Senior (14-19 y\o).
Members will need to participate in the
handling program the first year they show in their appropriate age category and
when they move up in age category (ex. A new 5-year-old Cloverbud will
participate in Cloverbud handling, then when they turn 8, they will participate
in Junior handling; finally, when they turn 14, they will participate in Senior
handling).
The purpose of the Animal Handling Program is to
provide youth with a safe, positive, and educational experience while working
with live animals. The program is designed to ensure that all 4-H youth develop
a consistent understanding of the skills, knowledge, and appropriate conduct
necessary to work safely and responsibly with animals while maintaining proper
control. Appropriate handling practices in the agriculture industry are
constantly improving and evolving. For this reason, youth should have continuing
education opportunities that will address any of these changes.
