Fair

133rd Annual Delaware County Fair (August 12-17, 2019)

This year Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Human Ecology exhibit in the Cooperative Extension building featured a display Celebrating 50 Years of Extension Nutrition Education. The interactive display was of interest to youth and adults with information about exciting and educational programs being offered by Cornell Cooperative Extension in the community for the past 50 years. EFNEP is a nation-wide community nutrition education program that helps limited-resource families acquire knowledge and skills. In Delaware County, the EFNEP program continues to reach over 100 families and 500 youth each year with nutrition education.

Each day children were engaged in Eat Smart New York nutrition education activities as part of the exhibit.  Cornell Cooperative Extension staff presented local food, MyPlate recommendations and information that is part of youth and adult nutrition education programs with Think Your Drink challenges, nutrition spin wheel and local food demonstrations.

Demonstrations took place in the afternoon and included As You Wish Designs giving a demonstration on how promotional products are made; Kortright Handworks @ La Basse Cour demonstrated about fiber processing techniques; Local Seisiun Trio playing traditional Irish music with Jim Haggerty, Kathy Shimberg, Jean Withrow, and Walt Birbeck; Sidney Farm to School program was featured in a demonstration by Food and Health Network/Sidney Central School; Energy Warriors youth presented about renewable energy; Elsewhere Farm showed fairgoers how to grow microgreens; and colorful quilting was demonstrated by Polly DellaCrosse.

Judges Gale Sheridan, Anne Lepinnet, and Betsy Weidenbach, along with the Home Economics Fair Committee found the 2019 exhibits to be very exciting and full of stopping power.  These judges found it a challenge to rank the exhibits as each did a great job of presenting information and telling their story clearly, legibly, and visually.
